Italian Cultural Institute
500 N Michigan Avenue, Suite 1450
Lawrence Garner will give a dramatic (and comedic) reading of 3 of Moravia's short stories from his anthology "Racconti romani" ("Roman Tales"). They are original translations and will be performed to musical accompaniment. An unusual feature of the translations is that they are punctuated with particularly colorful phrases in Italian from the original. Mr. Garner will also discuss the art of translation and the dilemmas of the translator.
Lawrence Garner has been performing on the stages of Chicago theatres for more than 20 years, a "second career" preceded by a 20-year "first career" as lecturer in political science at DePaul University. He has translated 3 books from Italian and was a major contributor to "Italville", (Exile Editions, 2005) a translation of contemporary Italian literature sponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago.
Free and open to the public.
