EUROPEAN BOOK CLUB MEETING: ACCABADORA BY MICHELA MURGIA

EUROPEAN BOOK CLUB MEETING:

ACCABADORA BY MICHELA MURGIA

September 27 at 6pm

Italian Cultural Institute

500 N Michigan Ave, Suite 1450

Organized by the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago and EUNIC Chicago, this meeting of the European Book Club will be moderated by Professor Caterina Mongiat-Farina from DePaul University.

Written with intriguing subtlety reflecting a sensual picture of local Italian life and death in villages during the 1950's, Accabadora is set in a time wherefamily ties and obligations still decide much of life's ebb and flow. A must read for those who love a touch of the unusual. This novel has been awarded seven major literary prizes, including Italy's prestigious Premio Campiello.

Formerly beautiful and at one time betrothed to a fallen soldier, Bonaria Urrai has a long held covenant with the dead. Midwife to the dying, easing their suffering and sometimes ending it, she is revered and feared in equal measure as the village's Accabadora. When Bonaria adopts Maria, the unloved fourth child of a widow, she tries to shield the girl from the truth about her role as an angel of mercy, protecting her daughter from the duty and destiny that must one day be hers.

Guests wishing to participate in this event should read the book in advance and come prepared to discuss it.

The English translation of the novel was published by Counterpoint in 2012. It is widely available in paperback or e-book formats.

Admission is free. Reservations kindly requested.  RSVP https://accabadora.eventbrite.com
