Dr. Alberto Cauli, presents “Sa Sartiglia”, a lecture on the medieval equestrian tournament

Historian and researcher at the University of Auckland, Dr. Alberto Cauli, will present a lecture on “Sa Sartiglia,” a medieval equestrian tournament, which takes place every year in Oristano (Sardinia, Italy) on the last Sunday and Tuesday of Carnival  A Medieval equestrian tournament called “Sa Sartiglia” takes place every year in Oristano (Sardinia, Italy) on the last Sunday and Tuesday of Carnival and it is regarded as one of the most fascinating and old Italian Carnival traditions. Sa Sartiglia has its own leader “Su Componidori” and over hundred of riders dressed in colorful traditional Sardinian costumes who wearing a mask try to pierce with a sword a silver star hung along the way in the heart of Oristano old town. Its origin is dated back to the Spanish domination of Sardinia around 1546. Two Guilds of “the peasants” and “the carpenters” organize Sa Sartiglia but only Su Componidori decides which riders can run in the attempt to pierce the star.

Religious aspects, cultural traditions and the historical background of this popular equestrian race will be presented by Dr. Alberto Cauli, an historian from Oristano and a researcher at the University of Auckland, New Zealand who published two books on “Sa Sartiglia”.

Since 2014, a silver star is assigned by the Mayor of Oristano as symbol of Sa Sartiglia for career achievements to a distinguished citizen. The “2016 Silver Star Award” recipient is Dr. Graziano Pinna, Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Visiting Professor at the University of São Paulo (Brazil), and partner of the Consortium Européen NeuroRhine (Strasbourg, France), who will be introduced during this event. Free and open to the public.RSVP http://sartilglia.eventbrite.com
