On the Occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, The Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Chicago, in collaboration with AJC Chicago and Illinois Holocaust Museum are pleased to invite you to the screening of "A Pause in the Holocaust", directed by André Waksman (2009, 52 min), in French and Italian with English subtitles.

Tuesday, January 27th at 6pm at the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago In the summer of 1943, thousands of Jewish refugees in Italian-occupied southern France enjoyed a rare respite from persecution, protected by an unusual force: the occupying Italian Army, who temporarily shielded local and foreign Jews despite pressure from the Germans and the French Vichy administration. In one Alpine village, Saint Martin Vesubie, life was, briefly, renewed as Jews attended synagogues, schools and cafes, and Yiddish was heard as often as French. With the invasion of Nazi troops in September the lull was broken and most of the Jews were deported. Veteran French filmmaker Andre Waksman, whose family survived the Holocaust in southern France, reconstructs this little known World War II history.  Holocaust survivors and their descendents have been invited to attend this special event.   Leaders of the Jewish and Italian-American communities will be present, as will a representative from the Office of Mayor, who will read a message on behalf of Rahm Emanuel.  ARTIST’S STATEMENT: ANDRÉ WAKSMAN "We can and must always stand to save lives. If the film has to be a historical overview of a painful period of our history and origins, must above all get the message of resistance against tyranny and humanity of life for humans'(André Waksman, Elena Bede, Danielle Baudot Laksine)

After the screening, Holocaust survivor George Brent will share his memories.

This event is free and open to the public.  A reception will follow.  RSVP by clicking here.
