THE ANGELS OF THE

In the splendid depiction of the afterlife of humanity portrayed in Dante's Divine Comedy, angels appear as protagonists, the true inhabitants of the celestial city. This lecture will present the way the angel was born out of the philosophy and theology of Dante.

Emanuele Coccia is Associated Professor for Social Sciences at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris. His publications include: "La trasparenza delle immagini. Averroè e l’averroismo" (Milan 2005, Spanish translation 2008), "La vie sensible" (2010, translated in English, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Romanian) e "Le bien dans les choses" (2013 translated in Italian, Spanish, English and German translation in press). With Giorgio Agamben he edited an anthology on angels ("Angeli. Ebraismo Cristianesimo Islam", Milan 2009).
