ERICAILCANE MUFFINS EXHIBIT

watch the video of Ericailcane at IIC.

With Ericailcane’s Muffins exhibit, the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago launches its new season showcasing experimental works of contemporary Italian art. Ericailcane is surely among the most fascinating figures of the contemporary art world. The rather enigmatic name conjures an artist whose identity tends to change with time and place, an artist who takes on multiple identities to suit his purposes.

His creations have been seen in cities throughout the world, from Bologna—where the artist resides—to London, Los Angeles, Managua, Bethlehem, and Barcelona among many others.

The world of Ericailcane is populated with fantastic little creatures escaped from some book of dark fairy tales: sullen little mice, frogs sunk deep in thought, melancholy bears, spiteful monkeys, hysterical ferrets, and sarcastic hens.

His is a modern bestiary that takes shape through a wide gamut of methods and media: painting, engraving, silkscreen, stop-motion video, and sculpture with puppets and mannequins using tools of every sort.

Ericailcane’s designs recall a painterly tradition that includes Bosh, Goya, and Fuchs, but his inspiration is pure avant-garde—cobbling together his piece from whatever sources he chooses, there are no sacred cows and the individual author is dead.

The Muffins exhibit will display more than fifty of the artist’s most recent works.

Ericailcane has collaborated with the Teatro dell’Argine, Banksy at Santa’s Ghetto, Louise Rhodes of the electronic music duo Lamb, and many others on the contemporary scene in art, theater, and music. He has shown in galleries throughout Italy and the world including the Galleria Biagiotti in Florence, Lazarides Gallery in London, and the Scion Gallery in Los Angeles.
