Teaching Italian in American Universities.
In order to support the promotion of the Italian language at a university level, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs appoints language assistants to foreign universities and offers grants to cover the costs. The teachers are selected among the secondary schools (1st and 2nd grade) personnel.
The language assistants often collaborate with the local Italian Cultural Institutes, thus becoming real “cultural figures”.
During the academic year 2004-2005, 275 language assistants have been appointed abroad. The Ministry also gives foreign Universities grants to support the Italian departments and to hire local teachers. To this respect a particular attention has been given to Eastern European, Central-South American and African Universities, which did not have language assistants.
